Helpful Tips & FAQs

Adding JSD documents

Whenever possible, use the link to the document on the corresponding JSD webpage. That way, if the document is updated, yours will be updated automatically (i.e. a calendar update), or if it is deleted or replaced with a different link, your link will break and you will know to look for the updated document.

Copying content from other elementary sites

This is usually fine to do, just make sure that you create your own links to any media files, especially images. Save the images (right-click -> save as) to your computer, then upload them to your media library and to your page. If you don't do that then any time that school deletes any images, your link will be broken. Also it just looks bad if your images are linking to another school's site. If there are JSD documents that link directly to a JSD webpage those are okay to leave as is.

Top-Level Navigation Pages (Tabs)

Your top-level pages create your menu tabs across the top of each screen. Keep the number of these pages to 6-7 or less. Use them to organize your pages into logical categories. In order to be in compliance with ADA requirements, these top-level pages must contain links to all the submenu pages in the dropdown below them. This means that you need to remember to keep these pages updated as you add or remove pages from your menu.

How do I eliminate the space between two lines of text?

When you hit return, that creates a new paragraph. Using Shift+Return just makes a new line, but not a new paragraph. Keep in mind that this means you will not be able to align the two lines differently because they are in the same paragraph. You can change some formatting for words separately.

How do I remove the border from images?

Click on the image, then click edit. Open the Advanced options panel. In the box labeled "

How do I get rid of the arrow symbol next to my links?

The little arrow image indicates that a link will open in a new tab. It is there for ADA compliance, so users are aware of it. It needs to be there if your link opens in a new tab. This option is found in the settings (gear icon) when you create a link. In most cases, this is the best option for links. It will make it easier for users to return to the page they were on quickly. When linking to pages within your website, it isn't necessary as they can use the navigation at the top. When creating links from images, it can really mess with the layout but is probably still best for user experience. You will need to decide which is better in that case.

Why does my horizontal rule (<hr />) not stay where I want it?

The <hr> element is great for designating section breaks and always should be used instead of "______". However, it can be finicky at times, especially around images that are aligned to let text wrap around them and around column layouts. Make sure you include a space (return -no shift) after the image. For columns, use the column utility "clearfix" after your column above the <hr>. If those tricks don't work, ask for help.
